Safety First on the Water

Canoeing and kayaking are two of the most relaxing water sports around but it’s important that outdoor recreation enthusiasts take certain safety precautions. Below are a list of rules and regulations for South Carolina paddlers.

  • All paddlers must either wear or have within arms reach an approved TYPE I, II, III, IV, or V Personal Floatation Device (PFD’s) according to the water types and vessels they are paddling.  For more details,  visit the Coast Guard website.
  • All paddlers must have a functioning whistle.
  • It is recommended that paddlers bring along a waterproof case with a fully charged cell phone attached to him or herself throughout the duration of a paddle excursion.
  • As with all outdoor recreation, share with someone when you plan to leave and return and the specific location and body of water you’ll be using.
