Nature as Teacher Preserve for Education is an 853-acre nature preserve located along the Wateree River in Camden, South Carolina, dedicated to connecting communities to nature through environmental education. The preserve, donated to Clemson University and located along the Wateree River, offers outdoor learning experiences for all ages, including school field trips, community programs, homeschool units, and Open Trail Days.
With diverse ecosystems such as floodplain forests, longleaf pine habitats, and freshwater streams, Nature as Teacher provides hands-on, place-based learning opportunities that inspire curiosity, stewardship, and a lifelong connection to the natural world.
Such a special place! With miles of trails to explore, you can make your visit as long or as relaxed as you’d like. Take a scenic walk all the way to the river, or enjoy a shorter stroll—one of my favorite spots is the creek, where you can sit at a picnic table and take in the quiet and peaceful sounds of nature.
The preserve hosts Open Trails twice each month—on the first Saturday and one additional Saturday. The second date varies, so be sure to check their website for the latest schedule before you visit.
